Nightlife in Copenhagen is set for a major change as one of the city’s most iconic clubs, Culture Box, prepares to lose a significant portion of its government funding starting in 2017.

Since 2005, the Danish government has supported the venue with €240,000 (1,800,000 Danish kroner) annually, but that funding will officially end at the close of 2016. The club called the decision a “very hard blow,” noting that the financial support helped maintain its facilities and book top-tier electronic artists.

In a press statement, the club expressed its disappointment:

“We are shocked that The State of Denmark has decided to remove the cultural support for the venue, and by that the support for electronic music culture.”

Culture Box has long been a cornerstone of Copenhagen’s house and techno scene, having hosted renowned artists such as Moritz von Oswald, Ellen Allien, DJ Koze, and Nina Kraviz. The loss of funding could mark a shift not just for the club, but for the city’s underground music culture as a whole—impacting nearby property values and development opportunities. Even those who monitor real estate trends globally, often point to such cultural changes as key indicators of how art and economy intertwine in urban spaces.
